The surf instructor course from the British Surfing Association (BSA) is the official qualification required for working as a surf instructor or surf coach in this country and abroad. The BSA qualification allows you to seek employment at hundreds of surf schools in Britain and in countries all over the world. The course covers all aspects of surf education including surf safety, surfing & coaching techniques along with group management. Successful trainees go on to work as professional surf coaches, introducing beginners and helping improvers enjoy wave riding or take their surfing to the next level.

Prerequisite:

 - A current Beach Life Saving Qualification acceptable to the BSA.

 - At least two years personal surfing experience.

The BSA Level 1 Coach will demonstrate that their Personal Surfing Ability is of an acceptable standard along with communication skills, understand basic coaching theory through multi choice exam. They will further demonstrate that they are competent to coach beginer surfers over 40hrs with a recognised BSA Surf School.

Level 1 is aimed at individuals 16+, with limited experience of surfing, who are new to surf/sports coaching and who wish to coach basic surfing techniques as an Assistant. The Level 1 Award is the minimum requirement for Surf Coaches wishing to work for BSA Approved Surf Schools.

Level 2 is aimed at individuals, who are aged 18 or over and have completed the BSA Level 1 and have held the award for 160 hrs of ABC lessons. Alternatively the candidate can apply to jump straight to the Level 2 Award as long as they can prove they have appropriate Coaching/Teaching experience in sports or outdoor activities.

This BSA Level 2 Award is aimed at BSA coaches wishing to develop their skills as a coach in order to coach improver to intermediate lessons. This is also seen as the most desired Award by most BSA schools for Lead coaches, and is also the necessary award in order for the candidate to be able to run their own BSA Approved Surf School.

All Awards are valid for three years from the date of the Coaching Accreditation Course or until the relevant lifesaving qualification expires (whichever is earlier).

If you think you need help, or are apprehensive about your personal surfing ability to pass your BSA instructor qualification,  we provide personal coaching for the intermediate/developer surfer using video analysis.

For £20 you can book a 2 hour, (pre-BSA course) video coaching session with Surf-tec, to aid in your surfing ability to pass your BSA personal surfing assessment. The video footage is yours to keep and can also be submitted to your assessor as evidence of surfing ability. Please book via Era-adventures
